May has been designated National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention
Month by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Although skin cancer is the
most common form of cancer in the United States, the likelihood of cure is high
if lesions are detected and treated at an early stage. Volunteer member
dermatologists throughout the country will conduct free skin cancer screenings
in their communities. The Centers for Disease Control's National Skin Cancer
Prevention Education Program, in collaboration with AAD, the American Cancer
Society, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Weather Service,
state health departments, universities, and other public and private
organizations, focuses on increasing public awareness about skin cancer risk
factors and appropriate sun protection behaviors.
